Eurasian Barn Owl (tyto alba)
This owl is probably known better as the “common” barn owl, which unlike other owls does not “hoot” but produces a deafening screech.
It has a “flat” heart shaped face with dark eyes and large powerful talons. It is found in every continent of the world except Antarctica

Great shot Jim, love the colours. I was doing some spotlighting in a rainforest a couple of years ago and came across a barn owl, it let me get quite close before it flew off, what amazed me was the lack of noise when it took off. You expect to hear the flutter of wings but, nothing, it was like someone had turned the volume to 0.

Hi Ian, many thanks for your comment. The silent flight make owls excellent hunters as their prey can’t hear them approaching.
